Effective Studying Techniques to Get Higher Grades

Money Saving Tips for studentsAs the exam season approaches, student find themselves highlighting important topics or running after professors to clear last minute doubts.  Different people have difference methods of studying – while one technique might work for you, it might not work for your friend. Whether you find a subject difficult, time consuming, or – let’s face it – boring, here are some effective studying techniques that will definitely change that C to a B+, or even A!

Use Online Study Tools

You don’t need to have your textbook surgically attached to you for studying – there are effective study tools like online flashcards on Cram.com,  and other tools that can be used which will work on your phone, tablet, desktop, or any gadget with an internet connection.

Form a Study Group

If you are in medical school, you might be good at anatomy but not zoology. Similarly, a business student might grasp marketing concepts quicker than finance. You can compensate for this lack of understanding by forming a study group with your friends. Each person will come with his own knowledge and concepts which they can share with the rest of the group and other people understand the topics they are weak at.

You can use Google+ Hangouts to get everybody at one place at the same time, where the group can share screens, work collectively on Google Docs, and use a shared whiteboard.

Understand In Your Own Words

The key to effective learning is to understand what you study, not just learning it without getting the concepts right. Get into the habit of explain theories and concepts to yourself in your own words, and write them down to future reference.

If you are a foreign student who is having difficulty grasping the language, there are great online tools like LiveMocha that can help you connect with native speakers for instruction, conversation, assignments and feedback via video. It also offers additional learning tools like writing and listening exercises.

Quiz Yourself

Once you feel like you have understood a theory or concept well enough, test yourself on it. While you do so, emulate the examination environment – time yourself, turn off your phone, don’t talk to anyone and sit upright. You can either design a study quiz for yourself or practice exam questions from previous years. As long as you closely stick to the exam conditions and approach the quiz with the right mindset, you can get an idea of how much you actually know. This will not only help you with assessing where you stand in your studies, but also prepare you for the actual exam experience.

Create a Study Plan

Set goals as to identify what you want to achieve in a definite period of time and then plan your schedule accordingly. Having defined goals will enable you to stay on the right track and make goal achievement easier. Be mindful of not setting unrealistic goals – if you can study one elaborate chapter in day, don’t push yourself for two as your brain will be exhausted and its learning capacity will diminish.

The study plan should be broad enough to allow for changes, but concise enough to ensure that every topics is covered thoroughly.

Incorporate these 5 techniques in your study regime and nothing can stop you from achieving exam success.
